I Like Big Books And I Cannot Lie

Reading is my original autistic special interest. I taught myself to read when I was 3 and haven’t looked back since. I just fell in love with books. They were a place I could escape to as a child. I didn’t have many friends in the human world, but that was ok. My books were the best friends I could have imagined.

I’m a very fast reader. To put things in perspective, I can read the 5th Harry Potter book, the longest one, in an hour. Instead of reading line by line, I seem to be able to take a picture of the entire page and read everything all at once. I also memorize everything I read. I love it, because no matter what, I can enjoy a book in my head.

Books also help me discover other special interests. For a while, I was really into serial killers. I’m such a pussy now, and I get scared too easily. Man, high school me was fucking hardcore. But at least I have a huge collection of serial killer books in my personal library for my friends and family to peruse. My goal is to have books, of all genres and topics, in every single room of my house. I want to live in a library.

Here is a list of some of my favorite books of all time. These are all books that helped me through some really difficult times in my life as well as just give me joy and strength in general. If anyone reads one because of my suggestion, I will love you for all eternity.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

Going Bovine by Libba Bray

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart

Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson
